Feature #7: African Visual Storyteller

Chamwaza Phiri: a Zambian photographer!

Chamwaza Phiri | K5 Chabe, Zambia

Fresh tomatoes sold in a pile of seven for just K5 (approximately $0.70) deep in the heart of Lusaka’s largest fresh food market. Outside the market, the same quantity sells for K20 (nearly $1).

This price gap reflects the power of location and value addition. While traditional market traders focus on bulk sales with minimal overheads, those outside incorporate convenience and packaging, commanding higher prices. Many small-scale traders are still learning how to leverage these factors to maximize their earnings.

My work explores socio-economic conditions and the everyday experiences of the average person. Through my lens, I challenge the often-overlooked nuances of our shared lives, drawing attention to contemporary realities while celebrating the beauty of simple moments.

Each photograph reflects a mind questioning what development truly means and the standard of living we strive for. Ultimately, my work is a celebration of who I am, who we are, and our relentless pursuit of economic freedom and better opportunities.
